Seconds weeks Project - Chosen Theme- urban surroundings For the second weeks photos we were given the flexibility of choosing our own theme and I wanted to look more closely at urban surroundings and the dirty side to the town and look at them in the way that appreciates them rather than not noticing them at all. I focused on street photography as my topic this week to show the surroundings of where I live.
A photographer on Instagram called Thomas Adam inspired me to do this as he focuses on the shapes and colours of his surroundings making them bright and exciting. I wanted to highlight the dreary everyday grey colours and use the shapes and structure to make them stand out as art rather than the everyday objects that people walk past. Looking at things from this angle taught me to really recognise worth of the things we overlook on a miserable weekday in Preston.
Day 8- Walking to university lessons on a Monday morning I always walk past a shop that I always stop to look at but I have never actually been inside the shop. I thought this was a good thing to focus on in my first photograph as it shows advertisement and how colours and shapes can attract people to things rather than greys and dark colours. My photograph is quite dingy and boring looking but the open sign really catches the eye and shows that using vibrant colours does help attract people.
Day 9- this image was taken directly opposite from my block of flats across the road so you can see the grey panels and the Windows reflecting the dark, rainy day that is outside at an angle so the brightness of the sky is in the top corner of the photo with the branches creeping in. You can also see the building I am stood next to and the cctv camera at the side which to me looks dark and daunting as it's the darkest part of the image. The reason I took this photo is because when I go into my kitchen everyday I look out the window and see the dark warehouse across from me song thought I would go to the warehouse and take a picture of the flat so I had the opposite viewpoint.
Day 10 - A brighter part of the sequence of the seven photos this is of the flowers that they sell on Preston market everyday to illuminate the beauty in which we walk past and don't realise it's there. I always see the lady selling these with a big smile on her face and she never fails to make me appreciate the little things and not take things for granted.
Day 11- This is by far my favourite photo from the seven photos from week two because it's bright and almost 70s style looking which I am really attracted to. It also used text in image and it's something that we have learnt about previously which draws me to this image more. The lines and shapes in this photo are aesthetically pleasing and I love how the word 'sex' is so small which is almost symbolic that it could either mean a lot or little because it is a small word which to some people could mean or show that sex isn't a big thing and this shows it OR it could mean the opposite and that sex is a massive part of people's lives and that the arming around it and the colour show how important it is.
Day 12- As a big fan of graffiti and street art I felt this image was a good representation of my street topic with a grime theme as there is graffiti and a police sign. The grey tones and the dark red tines of the bricks in the photo convey a dark day and the locked gate shows that this is a guarded rough area where you need to be careful. For this exact reason I went down this street as it looked like a street to try and avoid so I thought there would be some interesting visuals down there.
Day 13- On the short cut to the clubs that we go to at night there's an abandoned car garage that is usually locked shut by a gate. On this occasion it was open and I thought I would see how it looked during the day. The whole place had a 70s vibe to it and seemed pretty old and unused but it was so quiet and lonely that it was peaceful. The bright white and the red and blue window panel behind the glass reflecting the dirt was what caught my eye and has an trashy feel to it.
Day 14- On this day I went back to the warehouse across the road from where I live as I noticed some graffiti on the other side and climbed over a wall to see what it was. I was right and there were walls and walls of graffiti. At this point it had just started spitting with rain and the sky had turned grey which darkened the visuals and lowered the exposure of the photo which is exactly what I wanted it to do as it was a dark and dreary day again in Preston with only little chance of the sun coming out. Also the amount of rubbish in this photo and the skip that's been left there to rot shows that this location is left and not looked after well at all.
To summarise week 2 I feel my photos are reaching the theme I wanted to express as they were showing sketchy surroundings, the shapes colours and tones that are used in everyday street photography. I stylised my photos to show they are my style by the structure, colours and tones I used in my images and I feel this worked well in acheiving my goal for the week.
