For week three we were all given the theme 'Family' to use as the influence for each photograph we take each day. Now luckily I saw a lot of my family this week and made the effort to see them on different days which turned out relatively well but the theme I wanted to explore was portraiture and use black and white filters to make the images look classic and authentic as they were special images of my family.
Exploring the theme of family, I wanted to show my family in the way that I personally see them on the basis that we are comfortable with each other so do not care how they look. However, they reacted differently when I started taking photos of them on my iPhone camera and didn't want me to take the photo as I didn't tell them I was going to be taking any.
The method behind this was taking photos when they aren't ready to show what they look like to me and at the angle in Which i see them rather than what the whole world sees when they go outside. It's more of an experiment into the natural stills of photography.
Day 15- Beginning with my favourite person in the world; my little sister Tilly. When my mum announced she was having a baby when I was 14 I didn't realised that it would help me grow up so fast and learn the ways of how to look after a child and how to show her from right and wrong. Up until I moved away in September to Preston, she was my best friend because we spent so much time together and because there is such a massive age gap people on the street thought that she was mine and that my mum was her grandma. Anyway, this natural photo was when I made her laugh and you could see the lollipop falling out of her mouth and she was cold from being in town that day. You can also see the individual freckles on her face which highlight her youthful complexion.
Day 16- So the weekend I went home to stay I spent some time with my Granny's who is probably the strongest person I have met, she has been widowed twice and will now not get married to her partner as she feels as though it's bad luck. Even though these tragic events have happened in her life she still remains calm and easy going which is something I look up to her for and she inspires me to be stronger. The angle at which I took the photograph was to make sure I got the details of her wrinkles and her age in the photo so portray her skin and her age to symbolise who she was to me. Also, when she was my age she looks exactly the same as me when me and my mum don't really look alike so I find it odd that I look more like my granny than my mother.
Day 17- So this is my mother and she really hated me for taking this photo as she didn't realise what I was doing until I showed her what I took. She wanted me to delete it because of all her spots and the imperfections but I think this is how you should see people and how people should be comfortable as she is comfortable enough around her family and friends so why can't she be comfortable out in public? She is too afraid of what people think which is what we disagree on. The light shining onto her b,one hair is visually leasing and the slight smile on her face shows she is happy and content. These photos are so close up to show all the marks and imperfections in the faces that I see when I go back home.
Day 18- if I could choose a favourite image from this week it would be this one as the shades and shapes are amazing. This is my stepdad doing his sales work With his back towards the window. The light was shining in his back and the shadow was on his face creating shapes and dark tones everywhere. The reason why i chose to photograph him was because of the shape of his face and the stubble he was growing which would add to the imperfections topic of the theme for this week looking at family. The bright white shining across his face really stands out and catches my eye which the other photos are more faded grey tones and filters". The lines and shapes from the window blinds shadowing across his face create some lovely visual aesthetics.
Day 19- The word family doesn't always have to mean direct relatives family. It can also be used for people close to your heart and friends that you've been really close with that know you inside and out. My flat mate Sarah I only met last September but since we met we have become really close and we live in rooms next to each other. I heard her getting up out of bed so I knocked on her door and as she answered the door I quickly took a photo so she wouldn't expect it. She isn't the sort of person to be fussed by how she looks in photos so she was perfect for the project. The marks and spots on her face show imperfections again and how we all look at each other when we're comfortable as she was happy opening her bedroom door after just waking up which conveys that we see each other like this a lot of the time. The fact that the slight bit of the door as she has poked her head round in the photo is good as you can see she has just opened the door.
Day 20- Me and my younger brother only have a small age gap which means we get along great and have a good laugh together. I got this photo of him as he was doing his college work on his computer and he was laughing at something that was going on in the background on the TV. I felt that this photo slightly ruined the pattern of how I was taking the photos as each face is usually facing left but his is facing right. But then when you look it's like he is looking away laughing which is why I liked it so much. The dimples and wrinkles shows the expression on his face as content and the shadows from me are on the left side of his face which shows a contrast between light and dark.
Day 21- Out of the portraits this week I feel like this is the most structured and finely detailed with the lighting around his face. This is my Dad and he thought that I was texting when I took this photo and he was tired as he had just had a full 12 hour day at work and wanted to sit down and watch some television. The reason why this topic is so good to work with is because for a lot of people this is the norm at the end of the day in the evening as it time to relax and recuperate before the next difficult day begins. The detail in this photo seems a lot more improved than the rest of the photos I have taken this week and the fact that he has the light from the television shining onto areas of his face shows his age and wrinkles. The slight smile again is from being relieved that another day is over which is an e dry day thing for most people.
To summarise my collection of photos this week I feel that it could have gone better with the detail but I am trying to keep to using my camera phone as an everyday topic and source that I can use. I feel that sticking to the black and white theme throughout the images for this week worked really well and gave this set an authentic expression.
